Augsburg encerra as esperanças de Cottbus com gol no segundo tempo

Energie Cottbus faced FC Augsburg in a DFB Pokal first-round clash on 22 August, seeking to make an early statement at home. The hosts came into the match looking to build momentum, but found themselves up against a composed visiting side who dominated possession for large stretches of the opening period. An early yellow card to K. S. Manu in the 30th minute set a slightly fractious tone, though neither team produced clear-cut chances in a cautious first half.

The match remained goalless at the break, but Augsburg broke the deadlock shortly after the restart when A. Kade struck in the 49th minute. The goal shifted the balance decisively in the visitors' favour and left Cottbus with a mountain to climb. Kade's opener proved enough to send Augsburg through, though they added a second goal later in the match to extend their advantage. The away side's composure and clinical finishing ultimately separated the two teams across the 90 minutes.

Cottbus came out for the second half intent on getting back into the contest, yet conceded almost immediately. That early blow in the second period appeared to deflate the home side's ambitions, and they never truly threatened an equaliser thereafter. The tactical approach from Augsburg's bench kept their defensive shape solid, allowing them to control the game and see out the result without undue alarm.

Both teams pressed hard through the middle stages, with Cottbus trying to manufacture openings that refused to come. Augsburg's transition play kept the hosts honest, and their willingness to sit deep and absorb pressure proved effective. The visitors' experience at this stage of the competition showed in their management of the game's tempo and their refusal to get drawn into unnecessary scraps.

Discipline remained largely intact, though M. Hannemann picked up a yellow for Cottbus in the 41st minute before K. Schlotterbeck was cautioned for Augsburg in the 51st minute. Neither side saw a player dismissed, and the match was conducted in a professional manner despite the intensity of first-round football. Cottbus's frustration grew as the final whistle approached, but Augsburg held their nerve to seal an away victory.

The result sends Augsburg into the next round with confidence, having completed their opening assignment on the road without fuss. For Cottbus, the defeat ends their cup hopes at the earliest stage, leaving them to refocus their efforts on league football. The visitors' clinical approach in the second half proved the difference, showcasing the mentality required to progress in knockout competition.
