Al-Kholood edges thriller over Al-Taawoun in Saudi Pro League
Al-Kholood dominated the opening period and built a commanding position before the interval. The hosts controlled possession and created space through incisive passing, establishing a platform that left Al-Taawoun struggling to gain a foothold in the match. By half-time, the home side had constructed a lead that appeared to put them firmly in control of the fixture.
Edin Utkus struck first for Al-Kholood in the 21st minute, giving the hosts an early advantage. Ibai Kortajarena doubled their lead nine minutes later to make it 2-0, and Sergio Pinas completed a commanding first-half display by adding a third goal just before the interval. Al-Taawoun offered little in attacking threat during this opening spell, with their defence repeatedly exposed and their midfield unable to disrupt Al-Kholood's rhythm. The scoreline at half-time read Al-Kholood 3-2 Al-Taawoun in terms of shots on target, though the actual score left the visitors with significant work to do.
Al-Taawoun emerged with renewed purpose after the restart and immediately began to trouble their hosts. Abderrazak Hamdallah pulled one back in the 52nd minute with a well-taken goal that sparked genuine belief among the away side. The momentum shift was palpable, as Al-Taawoun pressed forward in search of an unlikely comeback. However, Al-Kholood weathered the storm and managed to hold firm despite the pressure being applied.
The final 30 minutes became increasingly scrappy as both sides jostled for control. Pinas received a yellow card in the 74th minute for a challenge that frustrated his side's efforts to stabilise the game, and Cristovao Da Costa followed him into the book two minutes later as tensions simmered. Al-Taawoun continued to search for an equaliser but could not breach Al-Kholood's defence a second time, with the home side's disciplined defending proving decisive in the closing stages.
The victory moves Al-Kholood up the table with three points earned through a strong opening 45 minutes and solid defensive work in the final quarter. Al-Taawoun, despite showing character after half-time, must now regroup and focus on their next fixture as they look to bounce back from a hard-fought defeat on the road.
