El Darmstadt sorprende al Jena con goles tempraneros en una sorpresa en la Copa
Darmstadt 98 made their intentions clear from the opening minutes and punished a sluggish Jena side to book their passage through the first round of the DFB Pokal. The away team dominated early possession and created a platform from which they could operate with tempo and purpose. By the time Jena found their rhythm, Darmstadt had already established a commanding position that the hosts struggled to overturn.
Maarten Smit gave the visitors the perfect start when he broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, catching Jena's defence flat-footed. The home side barely had time to settle before Darmstadt extended their advantage. Luc Duijvestijn made it 0-2 on the stroke of half-time with a clinical finish that appeared to have settled the contest. Enja Löder pulled one back for Jena in the 38th minute, but the hosts trailed 1-2 at the interval and faced an uphill task to find an equaliser.
Jena emerged with greater intensity after the break and threw bodies forward in search of a way back into the match. However, Darmstadt's two-goal cushion proved sufficient, despite the home side's increased pressure. The visitors managed the second half with composure, absorbing what Jena could throw at them while remaining dangerous on the break.
The flow of the match reflected the gulf in early decisiveness. Darmstadt controlled the opening 40 minutes and executed their gameplan with efficiency, while Jena's response came too late and lacked the cohesion needed to fully capitalize on their territorial advantage in the latter stages. Neither team created clear-cut chances to significantly alter the scoreline once the shape had been set.
Discipline proved a minor factor as Jena picked up two yellow cards through K. Lankford and S. Reddemann in the second half, both bookings arriving as frustration mounted. The cautions reflected the hosts' growing desperation rather than any serious breakdown in control, but they underlined the mounting pressure as time slipped away. Darmstadt's defensive organisation remained solid enough to repel the late onslaught.
The result sends Darmstadt into the next round while Jena's cup run ends at the first hurdle. For the away side, the victory showed they could win in difficult circumstances against an opponent fighting hard for an equaliser. Jena will rue their slow start and the precision with which Darmstadt punished them in those crucial early exchanges.
