Reading passou facilmente pelo Stevenage com uma atuação dominante fora de casa
Reading delivered a clinical performance at the Lamex Stadium to progress comfortably through the Carabao Cup second round. Stevenage, playing at home, found themselves unable to impose themselves on the contest and were picked apart by a visitors' side that controlled the tempo from start to finish.
J. Brown broke the deadlock inside nine minutes, handing Reading an early advantage that set the tone for the encounter. The away side doubled their lead through P. Lane just before the half-hour mark, and by that point Stevenage faced an uphill battle. The hosts offered little by way of attacking threat in the opening period, leaving themselves vulnerable to Reading's incisive play.
The second half never developed into a competitive affair. Reading had already seized the initiative and Stevenage lacked the cutting edge required to engineer a comeback. R. Williams added a third goal deep into the closing stages with the outcome already settled, underlining the gulf between the two sides on the night.
Reading's midfield controlled possession throughout and dictated the game's rhythm, while Stevenage's attempts to build momentum never gained traction. The home side's defensive vulnerabilities were exposed repeatedly, and they never managed to create genuine scoring chances of their own. For long periods this was a one-sided contest that Reading managed without ever needing to shift into top gear.
D. Butler saw yellow for Stevenage in the 29th minute as the hosts grew increasingly frustrated. Reading's discipline held firm until late on, when J. Dorsett, B. Ward and C. Piergianni all received cautions in the closing stages as the match became fractious. By then the result was long decided.
The victory sends Reading into the next round while Stevenage's domestic cup run came to an end. For the visitors, this was a assured display that suggests they will be competitive in whatever comes next. Stevenage will need to regroup quickly and rediscover their form if they are to mount a challenge elsewhere.
