Welbeck and Own Goal Fire Chelsea Past Luton in Cup
Chelsea made their Carabao Cup ambitions clear with a clinical performance that left Luton Town with little to show for their away trip. The match remained goalless at the interval, but the hosts took control after the restart with Danny Welbeck breaking the deadlock in the 50th minute. That early second-half strike proved the platform for a comfortable evening at Stamford Bridge.
Luton's defensive frailties were exposed further when H. Odofin turned the ball into his own net in the 79th minute, effectively settling the contest. The away side's frustration bubbled over shortly after when J. Johnson received a yellow card for a challenge in the 56th minute, but they never threatened to trouble Chelsea's goalkeeper.
Chelsea's 2-0 victory advanced them smoothly through to the next round without requiring anything approaching their full arsenal. The performance suggested the Blues have the depth and quality to balance their domestic cup commitments with their league responsibilities this season.
