Heart of Midlothian Progress Past Rapid Wien on Penalties
SK Rapid Wien 1-1 Heart of Midlothian after 90 minutes, but the match stretched into extra time where both sides added a goal apiece. Edin Kara had given the Austrian hosts the lead in the 34th minute, only for Heart of Midlothian to draw level through Paul-Louis Kabore in the 79th minute. The away side thought they had won it when Christopher Miller scored in the 100th minute, but Nikola Cvetković equalised for Rapid Wien in the 119th minute to force a penalty shootout.
The tie could have tilted decisively in the second half when Rapid Wien defender Toni Magnusson received his marching orders on 76 minutes, reducing the Scottish visitors to ten men. Heart of Midlothian seized the opportunity to press forward and found their leveller through Kabore, but even the numerical advantage could not see them home in normal time.
When penalties came, Heart of Midlothian held their nerve to win 4-3 on the shootout and secure progression from the playoff round. The Edinburgh club's resilience on the road, combined with their composure from 12 yards, proved enough to overcome a competitive Rapid Wien side and advance further in the competition.
