Le but tardif de Monaco passe de justesse Górnik en Pologne
Górnik Zabrze's hopes of a European run took a significant blow on home soil as AS Monaco's clinical finishing in the second half proved too much to handle. The playoff clash began with the visitors in the ascendancy, and they would not relinquish that early control despite a stirring fightback from the Polish hosts after the interval.
Monaco struck first through Mateo Biereth in the ninth minute, a goal that set the tone for a composed opening period. Górnik remained largely subdued until the interval arrived, but Erik Prekop's equaliser on 53 minutes breathed life into the home crowd and promised a genuine contest. Within minutes, though, the visitors reclaimed their advantage through Loïs Camara, and when Philipp Brunner added a third just before the hour mark, the match had decisively tilted Monaco's way. Górnik's revival proved too brief to salvage anything substantial from the encounter.
The second half proved the critical juncture. At the interval, with only Biereth's opening goal separating the sides, Górnik had every reason for optimism. Instead, the next 15 minutes of play yielded three goals, with Monaco's incisive attacking play exposing defensive vulnerabilities that the home side could not adequately address. Brunner's strike in particular, arriving just five minutes after Camara's goal, effectively settled the tie before Górnik could gather momentum.
Monaco's attacking threat remained constant throughout, but their control after the 58th minute was largely administrative. Górnik pressed and probed without finding the clinical finish required to mount a genuine threat, while the visitors managed the game with increasing composure. Both teams showed discipline in the final stages, with neither particularly aggressive in their approach once the outcome appeared decided.
Cautions were issued sparingly. Monaco's Mamadou Detourbet received a yellow card in the first half, while teammates Axel Soubeir was cautioned after the hour. Górnik's Mats Dietz joined the book in the 70th minute, though none of the discipline fundamentally altered the match's trajectory. Monaco's passage to the next round is secured by the 2-3 victory, while Górnik's European campaign hangs by a thread ahead of any potential return fixture, should one be required in the competition's structure.
