Craiova and Ararat-Armenia battling toward extra time
Universitatea Craiova's Europa League playoff push ended in stalemate against visiting FC Ararat-Armenia on Wednesday evening, with neither side able to break through in a match that remained tight throughout. The hosts controlled possession for large periods but found their Armenian opponents resolute and dangerous on the counter, creating a contest shaped by missed chances and defensive concentration rather than flair.
Ararat-Armenia struck first when Artem Malis converted in the 20th minute to give the away side an unexpected advantage. Craiova refused to panic, however, and drew level through Nicusor Bancu's goal just before half-time in the 33rd minute. The equaliser shifted momentum decisively toward the hosts, who emerged from the break with renewed purpose and intent.
The second half saw Craiova assert themselves as the dominant force, pinning Ararat-Armenia deep and creating the clearer openings. Yet the visitors' discipline and organisation frustrated their opponents repeatedly, and neither goalkeeper faced a save that would prove decisive. Craiova's attacking play lacked the clinical edge required to convert pressure into goals, while Ararat-Armenia's counter-attacking threat never materialised with sufficient clarity to trouble Craiova's backline.
Disciplinary troubles began to affect Craiova's approach as the half wore on. Defender D. Matei picked up a caution in the 39th minute, and midfielder O. Romanchuk followed suit shortly after the interval in the 47th minute. The accumulating bookings forced the home side into a more cautious setup, allowing Ararat-Armenia to settle deeper and make their visitors' task increasingly difficult.
The draw leaves both sides level heading into the return fixture, with neither holding a meaningful advantage in this two-legged encounter. Craiova will reflect on missed opportunities to take a lead to Armenia, while their opponents will take encouragement from a composed away performance. The playoff remains wide open, and everything will be decided when these teams meet again.
