Borussia M'gladbach took the lead when F. Neuhaus scored in the 11th minute with L. Ullrich providing the assist. Mainz equalised quickly through P. Tietz in the 18th minute, assisted by S. Becker.

Becker then put Mainz ahead before half-time when he scored in the 45th minute, with A. Caci setting him up. M'gladbach levelled through I. Lidberg in the 59th minute after another assist from L. Ullrich.

The match swung decisively in Mainz's favour in the final stages. E. Martel made it 2-3 in the 78th minute, assisted by K. Sano. D. Costa extended the lead in the 89th minute to make it 3-3. S. Machino pulled one back for M'gladbach from the penalty spot in the 90th minute, but it was not enough. Mainz held on to secure a 3-4 away victory.
