Atlas Hold Nerve to Steal Victory at León
Atlas made the perfect start to their trip west, with Duk striking after just two minutes to put the visitors ahead. Club León responded well and found an equaliser through Diego Cambindo in the 27th minute, breathing new life into the home side's performance. The turning point came midway through the first half when Cambindo was sent off in the 42nd minute, leaving León to battle with ten men for the remainder of the match.
The sending-off proved decisive as Atlas regained control in the second period. Ángel González restored the visitors' lead with a well-taken goal on the hour mark, and things got worse for León when Ángel Rocha converted a penalty in the 73rd minute to make it 3-1. León refused to give up, and José Cortizo grabbed a consolation goal in the 77th minute to set up a tense finale, but there was no way back for the hosts.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, León pressed hard in the closing stages and nearly pulled off an unlikely rescue. However, Atlas's defensive resilience held firm through eleven minutes of stoppage time, with the visitors managing the game intelligently to see out the win. Yellow cards flew thick and fast as tempers frayed, but Atlas's discipline in the final moments proved crucial.
The result hands Atlas an impressive away victory and a strong early statement in the Apertura campaign. León will rue the loss of Cambindo and what might have been had they kept eleven players on the pitch, but they can take heart from their second-half fight. For Atlas, this is a platform to build on as they look to challenge for the title.
