Wigan too strong for Fylde in friendly rout
AFC Fylde welcomed Wigan Athletic to the Fylde Coast on a warm July afternoon in what promised to be a useful test for both clubs ahead of the new season. The home side made a determined start, but their hopes of a positive showing were dealt a significant blow just ten minutes in when C. Sze opened the scoring from the penalty spot, giving the visitors an early advantage they would never relinquish.
Wigan consolidated their lead and looked increasingly in control as the first half wore on. Sze struck again before the interval to double the visitors' advantage and effectively settle the contest. By the time the teams retreated at half-time, Wigan had established a commanding position with AFC Fylde struggling to find any rhythm or attacking threat against the visitors' well-organised defence.
The second half saw little improvement in Fylde's fortunes as Wigan maintained their dominance. F. Murray added a third goal in the 54th minute to put the result beyond doubt, and thereafter the match became something of a non-event as the hosts went through the motions without ever threatening a meaningful comeback. Wigan's performance was composed and professional throughout, with their defence rarely troubled and their transition play consistently sharp.
The 0-3 scoreline represented a convincing away victory for Wigan Athletic and served as a reality check for Fylde ahead of their competitive fixtures. While friendlies offer valuable minutes and match practice, this performance will have given Wigan's coaching staff considerable encouragement ahead of the campaign, whereas Fylde will need to regroup and show considerable improvement when it matters.
