Minnesota United dominate San Jose in rout at Earthquakes Stadium
San Jose Earthquakes fell to a crushing defeat against Minnesota United on Saturday, losing San Jose Earthquakes 1-5 Minnesota United in a match that got away from the hosts almost from the opening whistle. The Earthquakes started brightly enough, earning a penalty in the fourth minute that Tomas Werner converted to give the home side an early lead. The moment proved fleeting. Minnesota's response was swift and ruthless, and by half-time the visitors had turned the match on its head.
JJefferson Pereyra equalised just six minutes after Werner's penalty, finding the back of the net in the tenth minute to level at 1-1. Kelvin Yeboah then struck twice in quick succession either side of the break, scoring in the 40th and 44th minutes to put Minnesota up 3-1 at the interval. The Earthquakes had let control slip through their fingers in a chaotic spell that left them chasing the game from that point forward, and they never recovered the ground they had lost.
The second half showed Minnesota's class in even starker terms. Mateo Caldeira extended the lead to 4-1 in the 65th minute, and by that stage San Jose's task had become impossible. The Earthquakes offered little in attack and showed a defence stretched and disorganised by Minnesota's passing and movement. Even when Bruno Kikanović picked up a yellow card in the 85th minute, the damage had been done long before then.
Minnesota's attacking play was sharp and incisive throughout the second period, with the visitors cutting through San Jose's midfield at will. The hosts rarely threatened the Minnesota goal after the early penalty and found themselves constantly retreating to defend in numbers. Minnesota's fullbacks provided width and support for the attacking players, while the midfield pressed effectively to deny San Jose time on the ball.
San Jose's discipline issues had a minimal impact on the match outcome, as the single yellow card to Kikanović late in proceedings came with the result already decided. Minnesota's team management was considerably sharper, with the away side staying composed and executing their game plan without any cautions through 85 minutes. The visitors' professionalism stood in clear contrast to the hosts' disjointed display.
The loss leaves San Jose with serious questions to answer as the season progresses, having been torn apart by a Minnesota team that looked far superior in every area. Minnesota United claimed all three points on the road with San Jose Earthquakes 1-5 Minnesota United and moved on with momentum, while the Earthquakes will need to rebuild quickly before their next fixture.
