O Fenerbahçe surpreendeu o Lyon com vitória fora de casa no playoff da Liga dos Campeões
Fenerbahçe arrived at the Groupama Stadium with clear intent and left with a statement victory. The Turkish side's clinical finishing in the first half proved the decisive factor as Olympique Lyonnais, despite fighting back through the middle of the second half, could not find the breakthrough needed to salvage the tie. This was a Champions League playoff that belonged to the visitors.
Vedat Muriqi opened the scoring for Fenerbahçe in the 24th minute, handing the away side an early advantage. The lead lasted just four minutes before Aurélien Brown extended it to 2-0, putting Lyon in a difficult position before the interval. Malo Fofana pulled one back for the hosts in the 61st minute with a crucial goal that briefly shifted the momentum, but Kévin Boudache's leveller in the 71st minute arrived too late to alter the trajectory. By that point, Fenerbahçe had already done the damage and the hosts' late pressure amounted to nothing.
The turning point came early. Fenerbahçe's two-goal cushion by the 28th minute forced Lyon into a reactive mode for the remainder of the contest. While the home side showed greater intensity after the interval and reduced the deficit, they never truly threatened an equaliser that would have forced extra time. The visitors' composure in possession, particularly when protecting their lead in the closing stages, reflected a team with clear tactical discipline.
Lyon created chances and dominated stretches of possession, particularly in the second half when desperation drove them forward. Fenerbahçe, however, remained resolute in defence and dangerous on transition. The away side's willingness to absorb pressure without panicking allowed them to see out the match despite sustained Lyon attacks in the final 20 minutes. Neither team's attacking play was spectacular, but Fenerbahçe's efficiency made the difference.
Milan Škriniar's booking in the 32nd minute for Fenerbahçe served as an early warning about the referee's approach, though neither side allowed the cautions to affect their shape significantly. Lois Openda's yellow card for Lyon in the 51st minute came during their push to equalise but did little to disrupt their rhythm. The discipline on show was generally good from both benches, with neither team capitulating to frustration as the result moved away from Lyon's grasp.
Fenerbahçe's away victory sends them through the playoff round and into the group stage proper, while Lyon faces the painful reality of European elimination at this early stage. For the Turkish club, this result represents a significant achievement on foreign soil against one of France's traditional heavyweights. The tie demonstrated that Fenerbahçe belong at this level and that Lyon, despite their pedigree, must rebuild their European credentials.
