Greenwood et Openda s’annulent mutuellement à Istanbul

Fenerbahçe and Olympique Lyonnais served up a cagey affair in Istanbul, neither side willing to surrender ground in this Champions League playoff opener. The home team pressed early but found little space against a Lyon side content to sit deep and hit on the break. The opening 40 minutes unfolded with few clear chances, both managers prioritizing defensive stability over expansive football.

Lazio's Lois Openda broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, capitalizing on a gap in the Fenerbahçe rearguard to fire Lyon ahead just before the interval. The away team's joy proved short-lived. Mason Greenwood equalized within two minutes of the restart, beating the Lyon goalkeeper with a clinical finish to level the match at Fenerbahçe 1-1 Olympique Lyonnais. The momentum swung decisively back toward the home side, with Greenwood's strike energizing the crowd and the players alike.

Despite their improved attacking play, Fenerbahçe could not find a winning goal in the remaining 43 minutes. Lyon tightened their shape and absorbed the pressure without capitulating, with Abner Vinícius earning a yellow card for a crunching tackle as temperatures rose. Both teams had chances to steal the win, but execution failed them when it mattered most.

The stalemate leaves everything to be decided in the return fixture in France. Fenerbahçe will feel they should have punished Lyon's defensive frailties after the break, while the visitors will be satisfied with a point on the road. Neither side has a decisive advantage heading into the second leg, setting up a fascinating climax to this tie.
