Deportivo Alavés claimed three points at home with a disciplined performance that kept Villarreal at arm's length throughout. Laguardia Boyé broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, finding space to convert and give the hosts a lead they never relinquished.

Villarreal offered little in response, struggling to impose themselves in attack despite enjoying periods of possession. The away side's task became harder when defensive pressure mounted in the second half, forcing them into deeper positions.

Alavés showed resolve in defence, though Quique Sánchez Flores picked up a yellow card in first-half stoppage time. Abdelhamid Rebbach received a caution shortly after the restart as the hosts grew increasingly focused on protecting their advantage.

The visitors pressed forward searching for an equaliser in the final stages, but Alavés' backline remained composed. Boyé's 31st-minute goal separated the sides at the final whistle, securing a Deportivo Alavés 1-0 Villarreal victory at Mendizorroza.
