Janssen hat-trick fires Portland past Minnesota in seven-goal thriller

Portland went ahead from the penalty spot when Janssen converted in the 11th minute, but Minnesota levelled almost immediately as an own goal from D. Callender made it 1-1 in the 20th. Janssen restored Portland's lead four minutes later with D. Da Costa providing the assist, then the home side stretched clear when M. Caldeira equalised for Minnesota in the 32nd minute. A. Markanich pulled Minnesota level at 2-2 with K. Yeboah assisting, but Portland moved ahead again as Caldeira scored his second in the 50th minute to make it 3-2.

The match swung back Portland's way after the restart. Janssen grabbed his second in the 55th minute with A. Lassiter setting him up, and K. Velde added a fourth for the home team in the 71st minute, assisted by A. Alves. Minnesota refused to fold, with T. Chancalay pulling one back in the 90th minute thanks to C. Harvey's assist, but Portland held on for a 5-4 victory over Minnesota United.
