Morocco stun Canada with dominant Round of 16 victory
Canada entered this knockout tie as hosts with genuine hopes of making a deep tournament run, but Morocco's crisp, controlled performance quickly extinguished those dreams. The Canadians started competitively enough, though neither side created clear openings in a tightly contested first half. Yellow cards began flying as both teams felt the intensity of knockout football, with referee decisions keeping the match on edge throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Everything changed after the interval when Azzedine Ounahi struck to break the deadlock. The Moroccan midfielder's opening goal arrived in the 50th minute and transformed the match entirely, giving the visitors something to protect and leaving Canada needing to chase the game. Rather than capitulate, the hosts pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but Morocco's defence remained solid and composed under pressure. The North Africans had clearly come with a tactical blueprint and were executing it to near perfection.
Ounahi doubled his tally in the 82nd minute to essentially put the contest beyond doubt, scoring his second goal to make it 0-3 in the making. Canada's resistance finally crumbled as exhaustion and desperation set in during the closing stages. Sofyan Rahimi added a third in the 90th minute to confirm a comprehensive away victory, with Morocco weathering eight minutes of added time without any further drama. The 0-3 scoreline fully reflected the gulf in class between the two teams across the 98 minutes played.
This was a sobering end to Canada's World Cup adventure, their home advantage counting for nothing against a Morocco side that showed why they belonged at this level. Morocco progressed to the quarter-finals having dispatched one of the tournament's surprise packages with clinical efficiency. For Canada, there would be only regret and the knowledge that they had failed to deliver when it mattered most on home soil.
