Vila Nova holds off Fortaleza fightback to claim home victory
Vila Nova came out with real purpose at the Estádio Olegário Maciel, and they made that early dominance count with two goals in the opening half. Danilo Mendes broke the deadlock in the 14th minute to set the tone, and when João Vieira added a second 18 minutes later, the home side looked completely in control. The hosts had their visitors on the back foot and looked comfortable with the two-goal cushion going into the break.
Fortaleza emerged as a different proposition after half-time and gradually worked their way into the contest. The away side pressed higher and created opportunities as Vila Nova's intensity dipped. Nathan Fogaça picked up a yellow card in the 69th minute as tempers heated up, and the visitors finally broke through in the 78th minute when P. Henrique slotted home to set up a tense finale.
What followed was a frantic conclusion with Fortaleza throwing bodies forward in search of an equaliser. Pierre and G. Fuentes both saw yellow cards as the visitors grew increasingly desperate, while Emerson Urso was cautioned for Vila Nova in the closing stages. Six minutes of stoppage time saw Fortaleza continue to press but they could not find a second goal.
The final whistle confirmed Vila Nova's 2-1 victory and gave them three vital points at home. It was a win built on a strong first-half performance, though they will know they should have been more composed in the second period to avoid the late scare. For Fortaleza, the defeat was frustrating after they fought back, but they lacked that killer touch when it mattered most.
