Wimbledon ease past Charlton in friendly opener
AFC Wimbledon made a convincing start to their pre-season preparations with a comfortable home victory over Charlton Athletic. The friendly at Plough Lane provided a good test for both sides as they look ahead to the upcoming campaign. The atmosphere was buoyant among the home support, who were keen to see their side in action after the close season break.
K. Jennings broke the deadlock in the 13th minute to give Wimbledon an early foothold in the match. The striker's goal set the tone for a dominant first half display from the hosts, who controlled possession and created a number of chances. Charlton struggled to find their rhythm and rarely troubled the home defence in the opening 45 minutes, leaving themselves with work to do after the interval.
Wimbledon extended their advantage after the restart when Trialist B found the back of the net in the 50th minute to make it 2-0. That second goal effectively settled the contest and allowed the hosts to manage the remainder of the match comfortably. S. Seddon received a yellow card for Wimbledon in the 62nd minute, while Charlton's I. Mesík was cautioned late on as the intensity of the game dropped away.
The final scoreline of AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Charlton Athletic represented a solid afternoon's work for the home side ahead of the new season. Wimbledon will be pleased with their first outing, having shown good attacking intent and defensive solidity throughout. Charlton will know they need to improve significantly when they next take the field, having offered little resistance on this occasion.
