Albirex Niigata hosted Montedio Yamagata on a summer afternoon as the two J-League sides clashed in what would prove to be an entertaining pre-season encounter. The home crowd settled in expecting a competitive workout, though few could have predicted the goalfest that was about to unfold. Both teams came into the fixture looking to build match sharpness ahead of their competitive campaigns, and that intent showed from the opening stages.

Montedio struck first with an early goal in the fourth minute, catching Albirex cold and forcing the hosts to respond.
