Preston North End made a flying start at Loftus Road. J. Kenny put the visitors ahead in just the first minute, assisted by S. Mills. Queens Park Rangers were dealt a further blow when D. Cirkin was sent off in the 15th minute, leaving the home side with a mountain to climb.

Kenny doubled Preston's lead in the 26th minute to make it 2-0. The away side looked in control, but Queens Park Rangers gradually fought their way back into the match despite their numerical disadvantage. K. Poku pulled one back for the hosts in the 66th minute to set up a tense finale.

With the match heading towards a Preston victory, P. Smyth equalised for Queens Park Rangers in the 90th minute to earn a 2-2 draw. The sides shared a 2-2 draw after four minutes of stoppage time.
